Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Guide

Published May 21, 2026

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is one of the most valuable — and most underutilized — assets a local business has. When someone searches for your business or a service you offer, your GBP is often what they see before your website. Getting it right matters.

Complete every field

Businesses with complete profiles get significantly more views and direction requests than incomplete ones. Fill in every available field: business name, address, phone, website, hours (including holiday hours), services, description, and photos.

Categories

Your primary category is the most important signal in your GBP. Choose the most specific category that describes your main business. Add additional categories for secondary services. Review what categories your best-ranking competitors are using.

Photos and video

Businesses with photos receive more direction requests and website clicks. Add photos of your work, your team, your vehicle if applicable, and your location. Add new photos regularly — Google notices recency.

Posts

GBP posts appear in your listing and give you an additional slot in search results. Use them to promote seasonal offers, announce new services, or share recent work. Posts expire after 7 days, so publish at least weekly.

Q&A

The Q&A section often goes unmonitored. Populate it proactively with questions and answers about your services, service area, pricing, and process. Monitor it for questions from customers.
